PMP Exam Simulators

You must be able to apply your knowledge, experience, and understanding on PMBOK to answer 200 very difficult scenario based questions to show proficiency to pass the exam.  These questions have more than one seemingly correct answer, and you are required to pick the ‘most correct’ answer of those listed – understanding how PMI perceives the best option.

The best thing you can do is to take as many high-quality practice exam questions as you can.   If you are going to run a marathon, you are going to practice running.  The same thing is true for taking the PMP exam, you must practice taking exams.

There are a lot of exam simulators out there, but many of them do not represent the in-depth scenario based questions you will see on the exam.    The following exam simulators offer very realistic questions and in-depth explanations:

PM Exam Simulator
The PM Exam simulator gives you immediate access to 1,800 realistic PMP exam sample questions in 9 exams. Question style and difficulty match closely what you can expect to see on your actual exam.

PM Aspire
Offers up to 3000 questions, flashcards, and other study options.

Best Way to Prepare for PMP Exam

One of the questions that I am often asked of PMP aspiring students, what is the best way to study for the PMP exam.

The PMP exam is a difficult exam that tests you on your understanding of the material, your experiences, and your ability to apply the information to situational based questions.   Although the PMP certification has defined minimal education, experience, and training requirements in order to sit for the exam, there is no guarantee that that is enough to pass the exam.  While there are some extremes in the amount of time people prepare for the exam, most people indicate they prepare for several months and spend over 200 hours studying on their own.

PMP Study Material Based on Your Leaning Style

One of the questions that I am often asked by PMP aspiring students, what is the best way to study for the PMP exam.

With this much effort required to prepare for the exam, one of the questions that I am often asked by PMP aspiring students, what is the best way to prepare for the PMP exam. I always respond with … “it depends” … on your experience and preferred learning methods. There are a lot of great options available, but the option you select should be based on how you like to learn. Some people are a visual learner, others are auditory, and others are kinetic (hands-on) learners. Our learning styles impact everything we do, how we think, and how we interact with others. So it’s important to select a select a method to prepare that matches your learning style. Here is a link to a free quiz to help you discover your learning style:

This article will provide some recommendations based on the different learning styles and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Note: There are hundreds of options available and I am only referencing material that I am directly familiar with.

Situational Awareness or Project Managers

Every project manager needs to master situational awareness. That is because no two projects are perfectly alike. What worked last time may have to be tweaked next time. Even worse, what may have worked just yesterday may have to be tweaked today!

This interview about situational awareness with Wanda Curlee was recorded at the Project Management Institute (PMI)® Global Congress 2016 in San Diego, California. It was co-written and co-presented with Marie Sterling. Wanda and I discuss their presentation and white paper Situational Awareness. Do you have the Emotional Intelligence for it?. Here is the abstract:

This paper explores the relationship of situational awareness and emotional intelligence of portfolio, program, and project leadership. Included in the paper is an introduction to situational awareness, emotional intelligence, SAGAT, recommendations, and details about the workshop exercise. Situational awareness plays a critical role in effective decision making, and more so in complex and challenging portfolio, program and project management environments. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the study of how in tune a person is with his or her own emotions and the ability to understand emotions of those around himself or herself. Through the use of a live training simulation, an individual’s level of situational awareness and their emotional intelligence will be determined.
